Parks & Recreation / Program Coordinator - Parks & Recreation

The City of Dunn is seeking qualified candidates for a position that serves as the Program Coordinator for our Parks and Recreation department. Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, supervises, and implements major phases of the recreation programs, special events, and population base program; performs related work as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Plans, organizes, and directs a diversified program of recreation services, camps, special events, and related activities. Organizes, plans, and supervises various community based programs and activities within the city’s facilities. Prepares and administers surveys to citizens to assess interest in programs. Collects and creates reports based on surveys. Plans programs based on the survey results. Coordinates summer camp programs. Coordinates with independent contractors to set up programs at City facilities. Coordinates the scheduling of limited service employees for classes and reception duties as needed. Communicates and enforces facility rules and regulations to users. Assists in recruiting, training, and scheduling necessary part-time and volunteer staff. Maintains a clean, neat, and operational community center facility. Assists in cleaning the facility. Checks the restrooms to ensure that they are in sanitary working condition. Makes sure facility is set up before and cleaned up after events. Makes recommendations to the Director on facility maintenance and upkeep. Participates in recruiting sponsors, vendors, performers, and other contractors for special events and assigned programs. Participates in administrative duties such as compiling a budget for recreational activities and programs. Evaluates existing programs through surveys and other assessment tools to determine the need to establish new programs. Collects fees and maintains accurate files and financial records. Maintains an accurate database on participant data to be used for financial records, advertising programs, and statistical data for recreation event and program planning. Coordinates the use and reservations of city facilities. Prepares after action reports on programs for Department Director keeping track of teams, revenue, advertising, equipment, participants, etc. Prepares purchase requisitions and orders for necessary equipment, uniforms, fees, and trophies for athletic leagues and tournaments. Keeps inventory of needed supplies and equipment for the facilities. Maintains accurate files and records on existing programs including staff schedules. Schedules appropriate personnel for programs and special events. Promotes the recreation and parks program through publicity and marketing. Plans effective working relationships with other community agencies and groups, both public and private. Maintains involvement in the community by working with local schools, clubs, and other organizations. Assists with other departmental programs and activities as needed. Researches and applies for grants and other funding sources for programs and events. Performs other duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of how to deal with the public in combative situations all while remaining respectful and professional. Working knowledge of a wide variety of community interests and needs as related to athletics and recreation activities. Good knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization, and administration. Considerable knowledge of all principles, practices, and methods of municipal recreation and athletics. Ability to plan, organize, and supervise a comprehensive program for leisure activities and population based programs and then determine the need for carrying out these programs. Ability to work effectively with different age groups and to stimulate their interest. Ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid. Ability to obtain a North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License. Ability to coordinate a wide variety of specialized recreation interests and activities. Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates. Ability to cooperate with and interpret recreation philosophies to the general public, public groups/agencies, private groups/agencies, and the City Manager. Ability to develop and effectively maintain relationships with co-workers, subordinates, instructors, and the general public. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to design, produce, and distribute informative and professional marketing materials for various programs.

  • Minimum Requirements
    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, early childhood development, or related degree plan; Preferable a professional recreation certification from the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association; Preferable certification in CPR and First Aid; Some experience of an increasingly responsible nature in municipal recreation or and equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a valid NC Driver’s License.
  • Special Requirements
    Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking and hearing. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including common office equipment (computer, copier, calculators, etc); athletic equipment (air pumps and scoring clocks); and at times may use landscaping equipment (shovels, rakes, weedeaters, mowers). Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently in order to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. BEING THIS POSITION REQUIRES POSSIBLY WORKING WITH OR AROUND CHILDREN, IT REQUIRES A SBI CRIMINAL HISTORY RECORD CHECK-Criminal History Check Requirements October 1, 2025 In compliance with G.S. 160A-164.2(b), if the position being filled requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity, the City must require the applicant, if offered the position, to be subject to a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI. These checks must be performed in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26, which authorizes the SBI to provide fingerprint-based state and national criminal record check to cities and counties.

The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887, at which time it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The name honors Bennett Dunn, who supervised the construction of the railway line between Wilson and Fayetteville.
