Police Department / Animal Control Officer

The City of Dunn is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Animal Control Officer. An employee in this class is responsible for carrying out a program of animal control in the City. Time is spent in the patrol of the City and investigating complaints concerning stray and domestic animals. Wild animals which are a threat to the safety of persons or property are occasionally encountered and dealt with. Initiative is required in an effort to ensure that animal owners comply with regulations, and considerable tact is necessary in dealing with the public. The employee is subject to hazards associated with handling rabid or vicious animals and maintaining public safety. Independent judgment must be exercised in deciding what action to take if animals cannot be readily captured. Receives and processes requests, inquiries, information and emergency calls from the public. Completes various forms/logs and enters and retrieves information from computer software. Performs general office duties: answers telephone calls, provides information and explains procedures, rules, regulations, etc. Investigates complaints and picks up stray animals; disposes of dead animals; takes apprehended animals to the shelter or attempts to find owner. Traps stray or homeless animals; causes citations to be issued or warrants obtained for violations of animal control ordinances. Investigates reports of animal bites, and enforces laws requiring confinement of animal for observations. Cleans and disinfects cages; houses and feeds animals appropriately while also ensuring the animal facility and grounds are maintained. Assists Animal Control Manager in enforcing City, County and State animal control laws. Inventories, orders and stocks necessary supplies. Participates in preparing animals for possible adoption; medicates animals; vaccinates animals; and assists with coordinating animal health care with a contracted veterinarian. Cares for sick and injured facility animals; documents injuries with records and pictures. Operates and maintains a City vehicle and animal handling equipment. Performs other related work as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of state laws and local ordinances relating to rabies, animal control and the confinement of animals; of methods of safely capturing and caring for animals; of breeds of animals to aid in identifying levels of aggression and the identification of lost pets; of occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in animal care, handling and control; and of basic animal handling, care, habits, behavior and disease identification. Ability to deal constructively and tactfully with the public; to maintain composure in stressful situations; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals; to apply basic principles and techniques of animal control administation; to produce accurate reports and maintain accurate records; and to correctly interpret laws and ordinances and to testify in court when necessary. Working knowledge of technology, computer, and software skills applicable to the job functions. OTHER CRITICAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to perform work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds constantly. Must possess the visual acuity to operate vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing breeds and colors of animals, and to prepare records.

  • Minimum Requirements
    Graduation from high school, and some experience involving contact with the public and in handling and caring for animals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Special Requirements
    Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Rotate weekend facility work to provide daily food, water, and cage/yard/runs cleaning; and rotate on-call duties.

Dunn was originally called "Lucknow" and was renamed in 1873

The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887, at which time it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The name honors Bennett Dunn, who supervised the construction of the railway line between Wilson and Fayetteville.
