Public Works / Fleet Maintenance Assistant

The City of Dunn is seeking a qualified individual to work in the city garage to perform responsible semi-skilled work in servicing light and automotive equipment in the City's garage. An employee in this class is responsible for servicing, replacing parts, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance on a variety of municipal vehicles and equipment in the City's garage. Work includes assisting more skilled mechanics, checking fluid levels, changing and replacing fluids and tires, installing batteries, fuses, fan belts, and other parts, and keeping vehicles and work area clean. The employee also spends considerable amounts of time picking up and delivering parts. The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs that include working in both indoor and outdoor environments and exposure to various hazards (loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils). Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated by observation and on the basis of timeliness and operational efficiency of equipment serviced. Checks tire pressure and tread; rotates and changes tires. Tunes motors, repairs or replaces clutches, brakes and drums. Picks up parts needed by the garage from various parts dealers; may require out of town travel. Services vehicles by checking a variety of fluid levels, inspects parts for wear; lubricates and changes oil. Checks and installs batteries, fuses, brakes, belts, lights, and air filters. Performs automobile electric work and troubleshoots associated electrical problems. Wires electrical equipment (i.e. radios, lights) and troubleshoots associated problems. Assists other mechanics in shop and on road calls. Operates a variety of tools and equipment including tow truck, air compressors, jacks, tire changers and balances, gauges, and others. Performs related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: General knowledge of the servicing, parts replacement, greasing, and lubrication requirements of vehicles and equipment and the occupational hazards and related safety precautions surrounding mechanical work. General knowledge of mechanical parts of automotive equipment and the methods and tools used in equipment repair work. Skill in the use of mechanical tools and equipment employed in repair and servicing work. Ability to drive a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; and to detect broken or worn parts by inspections.

  • Minimum Requirements
    Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills and some mechanical or automotive servicing and light repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL's).

Dunn was originally called "Lucknow" and was renamed in 1873

The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887, at which time it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The name honors Bennett Dunn, who supervised the construction of the railway line between Wilson and Fayetteville.
