Planning & Zoning / Chief Building Inspector

The City of Dunn is seeking a qualified individual with strong communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and professionally with builders, design professionals and the general public. This position peforms responsible technical and administrative work for the City's Planning & Inspections Department. Supervision and training is exercised over Building Code Inspectors. Work involves reviewing building plans to determine adherence to such building codes as adopted and set forth by City ordinance, and performing all technical inspections as required. Duties include issuing building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits; collects appropriate fees; investigates complaints, handles communication and facilitates appropriate legal action when required; makes site visits and gather necessary data. Additional responsibilities include enforcing minimum housing regulations, ordinance amendments and other related duties as needed. Work is performed under limited supervision.

  • Minimum Requirements
    A preferred candidate must possess a Standard Level III certification by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board in all of the following: electrical, building (includes energy insulation), mechanical or plumbing inspections and a minimum of Standard Level II in fire inspections. Must possess a valid NC Driver License.
  • Preference Given For
    Standard Level III certification by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board in all of the following: electrical, building (includes energy insulation), mechanical or plumbing inspections and a minimum of Standard Level II in fire inspections.

Dunn was originally called "Lucknow" and was renamed in 1873

The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887, at which time it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The name honors Bennett Dunn, who supervised the construction of the railway line between Wilson and Fayetteville.
